Get to know the writer:

1. What is your screenplay about?

My Name is Blue is a coming of age story following the journey that Blue, an obsessive non-binary teen, takes as they run away to follow Jack, a recently cancelled actor, across the country. It’s about trying to escape your past, facing your traumas, and letting go of dreams that hold you back.

2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?

My Name is Blue falls under the drama umbrella, but definitely has some comedic and heart warming moments. It’s a road trip movie, a coming of age, and a bit of an adventure film all in one.

3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

I’ve never seen myself, the core aspects of myself and those like me, represented on film or TV, me being a latinx, trans non-binary, and neurodiverse individual. I’ve seen latinx stories, I’ve seen a few neurodiverse stories usually acted by neurotypical people, and hardly any trans non-binary stories. To have a character that’s all of these at the helm, makes me feel seen. I believe being seen is incredibly powerful and that’s why this screenplay should be made into a movie.

4. How would you describe this script in two words?

Heart-warming, healing

5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

In middle school I was obsessed with the Hunger Games and I would watch it everyday for a while. I had the whole movie memorized at one point.

6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I came up with the idea right after Covid hit and began writing a few months into quarantine, so three years ago.

7. How many stories have you written?

This would be impossible to say. I’ve been writing since I could write. My journals date back to age 5. I wrote songs, short stories, short films, poems, ideas, and even a novel growing up.

8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

Another hard question. I go through phases where I over listen to one song and it becomes my favorite, but right now I don’t really have one. The last song was Into the Ocean by Blue October.

9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

I’d say the biggest obstacle was trying to find other sets of eyes to give me feedback. I was a college student when I started writing and a recent college graduate as I start to “finish” it so I can’t afford script coverage. Getting people to read a feature for free, even if they love you, is rather hard. Everyone’s busy.

10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Acting. Other than to express how I feel inside, I mostly write so that I can act. If I’ve been writing since age 5, I’ve been acting since 2. My BFA is in acting. I’m signed with some an awesome agents. I’m very grateful.

11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?

It’s a great site. All the major festivals are on there as well as indie festivals and free festivals. You can find whatever you’re looking for. I use it every time I’m submitting.

12. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

A festival with “Diversity” in the title is definitely one that’s going to catch my attention. While I wish we lived in a world where society didn’t force certain groups into “other” or “diverse” categories, I am grateful that there are people excited to celebrate us and our work. As far as feedback goes, an 8/10 is pretty exciting so I was delighted for sure. I also love any feedback I can get so I can see how people who aren’t in my own head receive the story.
