WE ARE GURUNG, 40min., Japan, Documentary
A Gurung village at the foot of the Himalayas in Nepal.
In that village, there is a custom that marriage is decided by parents.
A marriage proposal comes to a girl...
The theme is old customs and views on marriage.
A story about a girl in a village where it is customary for parents to decide who to marry.
It's been 7 years since I started coming to this village after the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and the small children in the village have grown up.
Surrounded by the Himalayas, the village lives in harmony with nature.
This project started 3 years ago when I received a message that a girl I've known for 7 years had committed suicide due to a failed romance.
From there, I started thinking about village customs and views on marriage, which led to the shooting.
Developing countries, including Nepal, are changing at a tremendous speed.
Technology, culture and people's way of thinking.
I thought that now was the turning point between the past and the future, and that I should leave behind what I can only shoot now.
