An image of a child looking towards the evening moon visited my thoughts one day or maybe it was a dream, from there an imaginary dialogue or dance emerged between the moon and the child. But who is guiding who in this planetary dance, is it the moon or the child?
Interview with director Hart Ginsburg
1. What motivated you to make this film?
An image of a child looking up towards the moon visited my thoughts one day or perhaps it was in a dream. From there the lyrics and narrative emerged, when reflecting more deeply upon the moon and the child. But then who is guiding who in this planetary dance? Is it the moon or the
child? It amazes me how a distant moon influences our lives as with the rhythms or tides of the ocean, in a kind of inter-planetary dance.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
Probably 3-4 months, if you include sleeping time.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Diaspora and Dreams. Sorry, that might be three words.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Externally, challenges in our society in terms of safety, I always hope that we can film in a safe space and that everyone on the team is treated with genuineness and respect. In terms of more internal challenges, finding ways to be supportive of each person on the team, while maintaining
focus on the intentions of the film. That balance can be difficult, but helps us learn and grow through each project. So even if things don’t go as expected, there could be something to learn.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I was surprised in a joyful way how insightful everyone was, it felt as if I met each of them and we were speaking in person. Also, it was helpful to learn from each response in how we can try to be useful for others through film. Thank you everyone!
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
It was probably something that was happening before conscious awareness. When growing up,
I loved to share stories of fictional characters, in a mysterious and playful space, with my brother and cousins. It wasn’t until later after studying psychology in graduate school, that I became more curious about existential-related themes that I began to make a conscious effort to explore short films.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
These questions are becoming more difficult. But one of my favorites is Being There (1979) directed by Hal Ashby. Besides the humor and film quality, it informs us how our assumptions influence perception, which feels fitting to these times. No matter how many times I view the
film, Peter Sellers always makes me laugh.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
I am impressed by your festival’s creative way not only to share art, but more importantly providing a space for the audience to authentically participate makes it meaningful and empowering. I deeply appreciate your heartfelt work and gratitude for those who shared such insightful thoughts. So I would say please keep it going!
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Very smooth and user-friendly even for someone like me who is from the analogue world
10. What is your favorite meal?
Mom’s cooking and popcorn.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
It would be wonderful to work on new films and collaborate with different artists, most importantly people who not only have the talents, but who have a broader life perspective about the human condition. In terms of films, maybe another shadow of the moon.
Director Biography - Hart Ginsburg
Hart Ginsburg works as a psychotherapist focusing on existential and narrative approaches. Outside of psychotherapy, Hart is involved in film and book projects that cover a wide range of topics on humanity and healing. Hart’s approach evolved from his life experiences, incorporating both Eastern, Western, and natural elements into his aesthetic approach.
In 2015, Hart Ginsburg founded Digital Tapestries in response to his experiences as a psychotherapist. Inspired by the healing potential of art, he aimed to serve the diverse needs of his clients through interactive books and short films. He soon expanded his visual materials by developing a workshop format, offering film screenings as well as panel discussions. Each of Digital Tapestries’ productions – films, books, and workshops – encourages meaningful dialogue and human connection and encourages participants to reach beyond a surface level response by awakening to their own humanistic capacities.
