Director Statement
My path to Jericho began with Bernadette. I was drawn to this character like a moth to a flame. Mishka gave her such rich language and imagery as a character that I was really inspired to step into her world and bring others with me. She’s beautiful and wild and unstoppable and alone. She will not lower her expectations for the universe, and because of it, she’s been abandoned to die on a desert road.

We close the film hovering between choices and answers, and by offering you a feeling, an insight, a chance to share her plight: always wanting, never getting juxtaposed with another reality; with each new breath there are new opportunities, another chance for life to go a different way, and so the film ends on one new breath.

This is not a conventional woman and I tried to explore that with storytelling that doesn't follow a conventional, linear storyline. I wanted to investigate a character through both concrete events and the quick flashes of imagery we as humans process in our waking life. It is a mix of seeing a person in their real life and their dream life simultaneously. Their present and their past. Does she actually know the mysterious stranger? Is he God? Death? Her former lover? Was it all a mirage? There are no easy answers here, for her or us.

But I think Bernadette wouldn’t want it any other way.
