GORDITX, 15min., USA, Comedy
Directed by Malik Ever
As summer comes to a close, kung-fu obsessed Ursula discovers she’s not the only outcast at an exclusive country club summer camp. With the kids’ golf tournament looming, Ursula hopes to win and prove her worth with the help of Chef Cormac, the transmasculine former ladies golf pro.
As a kid, I grew up in-between the midst of many identities that did not have representation on screen. I was constantly told by adults & kids in my life that I was WEIRD and though I always replied with “Thanks, I take it as a compliment” sometimes that wasn’t the case.
I was the first person in my life I knew who identified as queer and the first nonbinary trans person I ever knew. When I finally did see someone onscreen who I potentially could identify with, it was only through a lease of tragedy, and victimization.
As a director I gravitate towards telling stories that have been left off screen due to systemic racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism etc. through a lease that is joyful, funny, whimsical! As so many stories that are not white/straight/cis are portrayed via pain. I believe that in order for something to be funny it must be true. I think that Gorditx captures truth, the struggle that comes with being “WEIRD” and feeling unseen in a place/world where you clearly stand out.
To add one more detail into this. I love summer camp! I worked as a camp counselor for 10 years of my life and often think of it as the second best job I ever did have. Though Directing has now ranked itself as first. #hireme
