COPI, 19min., Brazil, Drama
Directed by André Gevaerd
Renê, 35-year-old, is a Brazilian night hotel receptionist and complements his income with side jobs in order to pay for his 6-year-old son's pension. Copi, 41-year-old, is an amateur, Argentinian artist who makes her living out of Balneário Camboriú night life as a travestite. Their path intersects and an unlikely friendship is born as quickly as it is interrupted.
“Copi” deals with themes such as loneliness, friendship, prejudice and emotional loss, and for this reason brings in its narrative the relationship that is established between a Rene, a Brazilian night shift receptionist, and Copi, an Argentine artist who works in the nights as transvestite. The first disturbed contact is overcome by recognizing the other. Thus, what seemed an unlikely relationship, turns into a friendship endowed with complicity and understanding. The project adapts to cinema the book “The Elective Fantasies”, by Carlos Henrique Schroeder, obligatory bibliography for admission to the main universities of southern Brazil. The literary work is recognized by critics and public, both in Portuguese and Spanish, and is currently in it’s third edition sold out in Brazil, and has been published in Spain and other Latin countries. The narrative universe created and lived in the city of Balneário Camboriú, was the writer's place of residence at the time of the book's conception, and is also the director's birthplace and residence city. This experience makes possible a true and faithful narrative immersion to the particularities of the story. Rooted in South American culture, the film has dialogues in Portuguese and Spanish, aimed at strengthening the affective and communicative ties between Brazilians and Argentines, who eventually would all be admittedly as Latinos. It is a work intimately rooted in local culture, but with an attention to universal feelings that can communicate with people of any nationality.
