Beg Yuh A Call, 8min., Jamaica
Directed by Mikey T Campbell
Omar is adjusting to life overseas. A call from back home changes everything.
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
My main motivation for filmmaking is telling stories that connect to my culture and help the diaspora connect back home in meaningful ways. I wanted to make a film that could be shown in classrooms and serve as the catalyst for conversations that can change the world.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you
to make this film?
This film from idea to finished product took me over 5 years. The idea came to me during the COVID 19 pandemic. I had an outline. It wasn't until 2024 I reached out to Raul "Blaze" Davis to help me write the script. Then in October 2024 we recorded one scene in Jamaica and then in January 2025 we recorded the NY winter scene. Then finished editing in June of 2025.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Thought Provoking
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
The biggest obstacle was saving up the money to get the logistics done of both teams in the two different countries
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking
about your film in the feedback video?
I honestly couldn't believe they were talking about my film. I have no training in film and for this to be my first narrative film and hear people I don't know interpret an idea I had is amazing.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
In 2018 I started my journey in film with a documentary called Jamaica Story which took me over 6+ years to complete. I realized I wanted to help shape the perception of my culture.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
The film I have seen the most would be Inception.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other
festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking
career?
I love the idea of speaking with the audience and answering questions. I'm a speaker at heart.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your
experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Filmfreeway is an amazing site that makes it seem less to enter festivals.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Jerk Pork and Rice and Peas
11. What is next for you? A new film?
I have a sequel to Beg Yuh A Call written and I have 2 other films that I have the script for. I am really looking to find ways to partner to get these films done.
