WAWA BY THE OCEAN, 5min., USA
Directed by Ryan Walker Page
A dance narrative that explores inner and outer landscapes—emphasizing the overlap of pain, sensuality, and joy.
Get to know the filmmaker:
What motivated you to make this film?
I stumbled upon this song and it flung all the doors open for me. It connected me to my Quaker roots, my mother's intense emotions, and the rare visual of Los Angeles when it is hydrated. It cared for me during a grueling medical procedure and I would use it for dance classes. After a few months of listening, I decided to reach out to the artist in the hopes of creating a video. To my delight, Mary said yes and just so happened to be my neighbor in LA!! All of these beginning signs have me a powerful green light to keep going.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
Probably six months. Two shoot days, multiple edits. Could not have done this without my dear friend and collaborator, Aaron Curry. He shot and edited and colored it.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Quaker disintegration.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
zero money, unpredictable weather.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
It was amazing to think of these people spending five minutes with something so personal to me.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
I don't know if that is my aspiration, but as choreographers we are always directing the eye.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Muriel's Wedding
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
More opportunities for conversation and feedback!
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Easy! Thank you.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Chicken pot pie :)
11. What is next for you? A new film?
Yes, hopefully!
