Director Statement
"As the director of ' Roll Up for Equity: Advocating for Access and Opportunity within San Diego's Cannabis Industry,' I embarked on a journey to uncover and narrate the multifaceted story of cannabis in my hometown—a tale that spans the scope from historical milestones to present-day challenges and opportunities. This documentary is not just a film; it's a mission-driven exploration into the heart of equity, access, and opportunity within the burgeoning cannabis industry in one of America's most iconic cities.
My inspiration for this project stems from a deep-seated belief in the power of storytelling to ignite change, foster understanding, and bridge divides. As a filmmaker, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of cinema, and I'm compelled to leverage this medium to spotlight the critical issue of social equity in the cannabis sector—a realm where disparities and barriers persistently shadow the promise of progress and inclusivity.
San Diego, with its vibrant culture, innovative spirit, and complex relationship with cannabis, provides a unique backdrop for this narrative. Despite the strides made since California's landmark legalization moments, the journey towards true equity in San Diego's cannabis industry reveals an array of untold stories, systemic challenges, and the unyielding spirit of those fighting for a fairer future.
'Roll Up for Equity' is a reflection of the collective endeavor to ensure that the cannabis industry evolves into an inclusive, equitable space where opportunity is not a privilege but a right accessible to those harmed and disenfranchised by prohibition. Through this documentary, I aim to shed light on the disparities, celebrate the advocates championing change, and catalyze a conversation that extends beyond San Diego, resonating with audiences nationwide.
This film is dedicated to the dreamers, the activists, the entrepreneurs, and every individual who believes in the power of equity to transform industries and lives. As we navigate the complexities of legalization, regulation, and social justice, 'Roll Up for Equity' invites viewers to join the movement towards creating a cannabis industry that reflects the principles of justice, opportunity, and inclusivity.
In telling this story, my hope is to not only inform and educate but to inspire action and empathy, encouraging a collective commitment to rolling up for equity. The journey is far from over, but together, we can cultivate a future where equity is not an aspiration but a reality within San Diego's cannabis industry and beyond."
