The community of the Quinchao Archipelago, Chiloé, is isolated due to connectivity problems that force them to uproot themselves from their territories to access health, education, among others. This crisis has been unleashed because private marine transport companies do not comply with travel schedules and arbitrarily raise transport rates. It is because of this that the islanders decide to organize to demand a solution to their problems.
Directed by Víctor Gutiérrez, Estela Imigo
Director Statement:
The motivation to create Isolated and Private came about when we discovered the living conditions in the Quinchao Archipelago, particularly on the islands in the inland sea. During our trips to the Isla Grande de Chiloé, we became aware of the serious connectivity problems affecting the region.
These problems directly impact critical areas such as health and education. On these islands, children are forced to leave their homes to continue their studies and many sick people die due to lack of adequate medical care.
The documentary took shape from the testimonies of the inhabitants of these islands, as well as local authorities and organizations. The structure of the film was also built during our navigations to various islands, where we were able to witness first-hand the reality faced by their residents. All this accompanied by the stunning beauty of the island landscape and the deep cultural meaning and traditions that are crucial to tourism in the region.
With this documentary, we not only seek to expose these challenges, but also to highlight the cultural wealth and natural heritage of Quinchao, key elements to understanding the demands of its inhabitants and the impact that isolation has on their daily lives.
