Jack Teller is an established science writer whose young scientist mother died of a terrible poisoning shortly after he was born. His father lived in complete denial and also groomed Jack not to ask questions about his mother at all. Now a grown man in his 50s, Jack receives a cryptic email from a stranger, offering information about his mother’s death and the whereabouts of her remains. Initially he is reluctant to expose himself to the painful feelings he has been covering up all his life, but at the same time, he really wants to know how and why his mother died so young and where her remains might be. After a short hesitation he decides to reply, however, the stranger refuses to reveal any information through email. The stranger also drops a hint that Jack’s father may have something to do with his mother’s disappearance, although not directly. Jack and the stranger establish contact and gradually build a complicated but extremely constructive relationship through a securely encrypted satellite phone. During their daily conversations and eventual in person encounter, the extraordinary life of Jack’s mother, the horrid events of her final days, and the interstellar journey of her remains get revealed in great detail and captivating suspense.
