TYRANNY, 12min., Hungary, Documentary/Experimental
Directed by David Adamko
A dysfunctional society controlled by a toxic leader results in the reality of illiberalism and the sole autocratic EU member state is leading the way. Recently, an angular black hole appeared in the centre of this nation's main square, which proved invisible to Hungarians. The analysis of this dark object offers a short glimpse at tyranny from the angle of anxiety.
Director Statement
I was a child in crumbling socialism at the end of the Cold War.
A teenager in a young, democratizing European republic after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and
a significant part of my adult life spent in the illiberal democracy of the System of National Cooperation. An infinitely contradictory political system that has turned the country into a post-modern tyranny, despite its nearly 20 years of membership of the European Union. I am a 45-year-old Hungarian citizen.
In my experience, anxiety permeates nearly all elements of Hungarian identity. This is linked to the fact that attempts at democratisation here have always ended in permanent tyranny, with irreversible and tragic consequences. As it is today, and Hungary is at the forefront of a global autocratic trend that casts a dark shadow over an already troubled future.
I believe that a better understanding of the psychosocial, political, global, or personal aspects of the phenomenon of tyranny is essential in addressing the challenges facing humanity.
