TOMARO, 17min., Nigeria, Documentary
Directed by Kimberly Cecchini
Bring out the voices and offer an honest, intimate glimpse into the complexities of life in a riverine community outside of the city in Nigeria.
Director Statement
Our friends and collaborators in Nigeria have shared the vibrancy, hope, and humanity that tends to be less apparent in ‘Western’ media. With their blessings, I am excited to have this film bring out their voices and offer an honest, intimate glimpse into the complexities of life in a riverine community outside of the city. As an educator myself, I am also pleased to relay how the expansion of education is influencing a community’s future and its place on the map.
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
As a teacher, I believe in the power of education and, in getting to know the Tomaro community, I heard their desire to build their community's leadership with that power.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
Five years.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Future leadership.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Cash flow!
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I was grateful for the kind words and appreciate that the film appeared to make an impact on the audience, but would also have welcomed more critical feedback as well.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
At Rutgers University, I took a couple of lecture courses on social documentary photography and film including one with Martha Rosler who helped me develop a critical eye for media in general.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
I'm not sure, but my favorite film is Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love. Plus, my brother and I have a shared nostalgia for Cool Runnings.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
I appreciate how thoughtful this festival is in planning to support burgeoning careers. Festivals could offer more opportunities for career networking with leaders in filmmaking and adjacent industries.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Since this is currently not my full-time gig, I am very grateful that FilmFreeway is a common application.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Whatever my spouse is cooking is my favorite! Right now I'm loving a Singapore noodle dish.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
Currently, I am developing my career as a content writer and am open to opportunities!
