THE AIR YOU BREATHE, 4min., Columbia, Music Video
Directed by Sara Lucia Birceño, Leonardo Jurado
The air you breathe is inspired by those couple conversations in which there is nothing left but the breakup. Between disagreements, fights and wounds we try to rebuild memories that are no longer common between two people. It is a reflection on love that can no longer be decided by one party.
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
The first time when we talked with Nina Rodriguez (the artist) and we heard the song "The air you breathe", we loved the song.
Personally, the first image that I saw was a tired couple, in the middle of nowhere, with a whole heartbreak story behind. The universe was a world flooded as a representation of their deep feelings, a place where it is almost impossible to breathe.
Months ago, Leo and I had talked about the idea to make a film with dance and performing arts. We thought that "The Air You Breathe" was the perfect opportunity to tell a story about love with an abstract performance about the feelings around a break up story. We decided to link these resources to write a narrative around the pain, indifference and coolness.
Without knowing, Nina had the same feeling and idea for the videoclip for her song. She trusted in our vision about the film and we started to work in the production. She told us that every verse of the song was written as a catharsis of love.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
We wrote the story in a couple of days and it was two long days of production and two weeks of post-production.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Sincere and poetic
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
The biggest obstacle was the budget we had. We needed to find a way to simplify our ideas to shoot something possible according to our resources. However, We counted on an amazing crew that always had the best intention of creating magical images. It was a reminder that passion is so important when you are making art.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I felt a huge sense of joy and gratitude. I have always believed in the film as a vehicle to connect with people through stories and feelings, and it is great seeing and hearing people talking about your film from their point of view. We created a story with a significance, but people interpret from their own reality. That is magical.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
I have always enjoyed watching movies. When I was a child, I wondered how films were made and how filmmakers invented those incredible stories. I had always loved photography. However, it was in High-School when I realized I wanted to spend my life telling stories through moving images. I had to film a documentary about homeless people and when I projected the film to everyone, they cried and empathized. I knew that something special had occurred.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
The Lion King.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
It would be great to have critics' feedback and filmmakers suggestions.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
It was great. The platform is very intuitive and helps filmmakers to connect with audiences and festivals around the world. It is a great window to show your art.
10. What is your favorite meal?
I don't know if I have a favorite one, but Mexican and Italian food definitely come first place.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
I'm writing a short film, which I expect will be filmed in 2023.
