Director Statement
‘Stockholm’ is the story of a young gay man who embarks on an unusual first date with the person who once abused him, in a conquest to take control of his own past. Frankly told with very little dialogue, the intention is to find an original, mindful yet thrilling way to bring the viewer into the mind and experience of the central character as he tries to piece together a repressed trauma memory. What sets this vision apart is that we’re not voyeurs pitying a damaged character, but instead we are much closer to his brave and visceral experience, helping us relate and empathize with him and as well as other survivors. An estimated 12,000 men are raped in the UK every year but talking about male sexual assault is still a huge taboo. Our ambition is that this film will provide an artistic intervention, kick-starting conversations that are inclusive of male survivors, and that encourage all to investigate and heal trauma in their own lives.
