Get to know the producer/actor Don Huffman:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
The song “Static” was written at a point in my life where I was going through many personal family matters, and I wanted to have a film that captured the bond between father and daughter while integrating my love for sci fi elements. Director Jamin Mears wrote the perfect script to align my song with what I envisioned storytelling wise. I believe from the audience reactions so far, the cinematography and plot achieved exactly want we were looking for.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you
to make this film?
After initial conversations with Jamin on where I wanted the story to go, he began writing the script and developing the storyboard over the course of two months. We began filming approximately a month after that. I would say the whole process was approximately 5-6 months from start to finish.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
“Apocalyptic thriller”. So many different elements in this short film, but it never quits pumping from beginning to end. The music and setting blend cohesively into the narrative and keeps the audience guessing.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Time. We only had a couple days for filming at the location, so we had to maximize our time filming while also editing the script as we went.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking
about your film in the feedback video?
Teary eyed and overwhelmed that someone would find this video so engaging. All I ever wanted was to tell a story through film. The reactions brought that dream to reality and more. I could never imagine someone entering this world of fiction and understanding the message so clearly. I am absolutely blown away by the reception.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
It’s been years since the very first music video entered our world on MTV. I have watched my favorite artists make some landmark short films from “Thriller” on down the line, and it’s been my goal to bring back that movie edge to music videos. I believe “Static” accomplishes so much in less than 5 minutes that people are going to want more.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Easily “Top Gun” haha. That movie never loses its action appeal even 30 years later.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other
festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
I think this festival does a great job of marketing films that are submitted and that in itself is so beneficial. For those filmmakers looking for more feedback or educational experiences, panels are always useful to learn new techniques.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your
experiences been working on the festival platform site?
We have applied to numerous festivals and have been accepted already to six different ones. I am astonished at the level of communication and opportunities being offered through FilmFreeway. This film wouldn’t be where it is without the tools available on that site.
10. What is your favorite meal?
I’m a fan of many different cultural foods. Mexican, Italian, and Greek are some of my favorites.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
“Static” was the beginning of a trilogy. We will begin filming the next video called “Chaos Serum”
In the Fall for release late this year. The final film in the trilogy is called “One Way Back” and will be released in Summer 2024.
