Director Statement
“Speaking of Silence” is an artistic challenge unique to anything I have taken on before. The film is a musically driven narrative in which the writing, video, and performance of a song actively drive a story about consciousness and the vulnerable requirements of human connection. Inspired by musical storytellers such as Kendrick Lamar and Pink Floyd, I wanted to take what I had learned in theatre and cinema to a place where music truly carries the arc of a character.
As the songwriter-actor, screenwriter-director, I experimentally aimed to create a film that articulates a silent language in human connection through a first person-expressive perspective as the subject, and a third person-commentative perspective as the filmmaker. Leaving the theatre acting world, it was my goal to come full circle by the end of my degree to get back in an acting role front of the camera; “Speaking of Silence” was the two-feet forward leap that allowed me to do just that.
