SHE IS MY FEAR AND FEAR IS A BONE, 4min., USA, Experimental
Directed by Kylie Heewon Park
An experimental short film inspired by a spontaneous collective score written by multiple people. The director asked random people around her to contribute a sentence or two to build a narrative. Using their sentences and words as inspirations, she reinterpreted the narrative into a performance.

Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
I was inspired by a spontaneous collective score written by multiple people. I started the first sentence, and then I asked random people around me to contribute a sentence or two to build a narrative. Using their sentences and words as inspirations, I reinterpreted the narrative into a performance.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
It took about a month to create. Once I had an idea, I built the narrative with random people I met over a couple of days, found a performer and a sound artist to work with, filmed it, worked on the sound for a couple of weeks, and edited the footage with the final sound.
3. How would you describe your film in two words?
Fear, Friend
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
The process of making this film was very performative and spontaneous in a lot of ways, so I didn't have many obstacles compared to making other films I've made. However, the sound was probably quite challenging. It took several weeks to perfect the sound that really matches the film. I gave 100% creative decisions to Kelvin (Sound artist for the film), and he did such an amazing job although it was tough at times for him to really execute how he wanted to deliver the sound. I'd like to give him a huge shout out here. Thank you Kel! You're amazing!
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
Since I've never gotten any constructive feedback directly from the audience at the festival, it felt amazing to hear them. I am so grateful for this opportunity to be able to hear direct reviews from people who loved watching my film.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
A long answer will be:
I'm dyslexic and I studied fine arts in college. I like films because in film, moments are beyond words. Film is a powerful medium that stimulates many of our senses. A film incorporates a wide arrange of elements including space, movement, time, sound and texture. I gradually realized how film has helped me better understand and articulate about myself, other human beings and the world around me, which led me to become a filmmaker. I consider the medium not as a two-dimensional capture of moving images but rather light, space, movement, touch, sight and sound.
A short answer will be:
It was probably in high school when I was in a broadcasting club that I realized that I like making films. I was a producer for Special Events like Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, and etc. I realized I love making short films through that experience.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Spirited Away by Miyazaki Hayao. I probably watched it over 20 times.
I don't think there are a lot of movies that make me want to rewatch it over and over again.
I believe Spirited Away is such a well-made movie because I discover new things every time I watch it. I believe a good movie is the one that makes the audience want to watch it again, and they discover new things when they watch it again.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
So far it has been an amazing experience to be able to get a lot of helpful feedback for the film. Thank you so much.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
It has been very convenient and helpful!
10. What is your favorite meal?
Kimchi Fried Rice. All time Favorite.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
I'm planning on something but I'm not sure when I'll be able to make it. But until then, I'd like to be present in the moment, today, now, as much as possible.
Please stay tuned!
