Interview with director Evey Yu
1. What motivated you to make this film?
When I made this movie, I had just come out of a relationship that inspired this movie. I come from a cultural background where women are not expected to express or even explore their sexuality. Even a seemingly loving partner can be so ignorant and insensitive when comes to this subject matter as if sex is only a matter for men. Even in the western world, Asian women are often time depicted as passive and submissive. I made this movie with the intention to subvert this bias and advocate that women should feel free to speak out about their sexuality and that men should also realize the importance of pleasing their partners.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
Two months. This is the first film I made after coming to Chapman University. It was an exercise for a class, and they only gave us one month to prepare.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Personal
Vulnerable
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Since the school only gave us one month to prepare the production, we had to adapt things as they progressed and go with whatever resources we could get.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I am very happy and very surprised that how my intention and my own understanding of the movie are so well understood and appreciated by the audience.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
When the school tells me that my first project is happening in one month.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Probably Black Swan because I was writing a LOOOOOONG essay on it.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
I absolutely love the feature that all of us get feedback from audiences. It's very useful. It would be nice if we could see the live responses.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How have your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
It was great. I find it easy to use, and all festivals use and update information on the platform very timely.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Hotpot
11. What is next for you? A new film?
After this film, I made another 3-minute comedy - LOSING IT, and another 15-minute psychological thriller, ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT MARIGOLD. ATGINM is a much more mature film when it comes to filmmaking itself, and it is still in its post. Hopefully, we can finish it soon and start submitting it to festivals. My next project will be shot in about three months, which is a soft Si-Fi Romance.
