if i put the skate over my head i become the ground, 21min., Brazil
Directed by Clara Nunes, Pipa Souza
With the visions of Chuchu Kamel, Lucca Alvarenga, Kim Terra, Patty Skater, Pipa Souza, Rodrigo Kbeça Lima and Tereza Skateira, the short shines a light on the universe of queer skateboarding scene in Brazil and embraces the movement to deconstruct traditional stereotypes in the cultural movement of skateboarding . Disassociating from the traditional aggressive and masculinized format, skate practice comes to fight against different prejudices and situations experienced by the LGBTQIAP+ community in Skateboarding.
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film? - my main motivation was to shine a light on the queer skateboarding scene here in brazil, is still such a male dominated community and i wanted to open people's eyes to what is out there, to approximate the theme to people.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? - believe it or not, less than 3 months! the film started on a workshop with 12 creative people from são paulo (art, gastronomy, photography, skate) and when Pipa gave out the idea we already had a deadline, so it was a rush! but it was worth it.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!? - a necessary skatefilm
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? - the deadline! we had to make it work for the deadline, so as a producer and director of the project, my main obstacle was time.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? - well, honestly, it brought tears to eyes. this film is so important to me, to the people on it and to the queer skate scene here, that was very strong to see people that are not related to skate or to brazil to see it. made me very emotional.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films? - when i was a kid and i read a book by a brazilian author called "luna clara and apolo 11"; it was so visual to me and i wanted to make that film.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life? - i think the film i saw the most would be me you and everyone we know by miranda july, or holy motors by leos carax.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career? - i think spreading the stories is strong enough.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site? - it was a good experience, made it easier to browse festivals and see which ones would make sense with our film.
10. What is your favorite meal? - oh, i think its shakshuka!
11. What is next for you? A new film? - always new films; always documentaries that are able to shine a light on things i believe need to spread out. right now im working on a documentary about the female skate history in brazil, that will come out in 2024!
