GENERATING CHAOS, 11min., USA
Directed by Carlos Felipe Garcia
Generative art explores the relationship between order and chaos, as well as the concept of infinite variations within constraints. By embracing the inherent unpredictability of computational processes, generative art pushes the boundaries of traditional art forms and challenges the traditional notion of the artist as the sole creator of a work of art. Two established pioneers of the NFT and digital art space, along with two rising artists, guide us on a journey through the origins of the movement and their passion for generative art.
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
CF - This project came about from a conversation between my editor and me when we had wrapped up a project for a client. We both felt strongly that there was still more story to be told and we wanted people to hear about Generative Art as it is fascinating.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
CF - It took us about three weeks. We had a three-day shoot. We then went through all of the footage, and spent two weeks going through the footage and picking out the best sound bites to piece together the story.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
CF - Fascinatingly unexpected
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
CF - I believe our biggest obstacle was piecing together the narrative. We had so much great information to share. It was just cutting it down to what was easily digestible, that was difficult.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
CF - It was intriguing! I wasn't sure how people would respond to Generative Art. Right now there so much "A.I" talk going around, I thought it may get swept under the rug or just be shrugged off.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
CF - I was about 9 or 10. I've always wanted to make films as long as I can remember.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
CF - City of God. It's my favorite film.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
CF - So far, this has been great. I think as long as it is seen by other people that is all that you can hope for.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
CF - The platform site itself is fine. I'm not the biggest fan of the site, I wish they wouldn't spam you with so many festival submissions. At first it was overwhelming. I had to go in and update my preferences.
10. What is your favorite meal?
CF - Oysters!
11. What is next for you? A new film?
CF - I'm currently trying to get a Music Documentary project off the ground. I'm also proactively continuing my Commercial Directing Career! This year has been a difficult year but just trying to stay positive. Looking onwards and upwards!
