Raised as Catholics by the Queen of Portugal, the orphans Leonor, Brites and Mécia are sent to the Brazilian colony with the order to get married. The hard adaptation to the precariousness of the New World is felt differently by each one of them. Leonor is the one who most rejects the new reality and she writes letters to the queen asking for permission to return. The answer, however, never arrives. As time passes, she falls in love with her husband, Escobar, has children with him and starts to admire the Jewish religion. Brites, meanwhile, does everything she can to seduce her violent husband, Tales, and give him a son. Mécia, however, rejected by her husband due to her physical disability, falls in love with an Indigenous man. Their friendship is put to the test when the Inquisitor arrived in Brazil in 1591, spreading fear and distrust among the inhabitants of the colony. Attracted by the wealth of Escobar`s sugar plant and distrusting to Escobar’s New Christian status, the Inquisitor encourages people linked to him to commit treason.
