Get to know the writer:
1. What is your screenplay about?
Call of the Void is about a group of Navy SEAL recruits that have just started their training down in Coronado California, called BUD/s (Basic Underwater Demolition training) and their highly decorated instructor, discovering and having to overcome mysterious and strange occurrences after two fellow recruits go missing in the SoCal desert.
2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?
It's a nice and fun blend of genres - I like to say Call of the Void is a supernatural horror thriller. Stranger Things meets Navy SEALS.
3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?
This screenplay should be made into a movie because it's just loads of fun. The characters can be witty and personable and the setting is perfect for a fun summertime Netflix movie or series.
4. How would you describe this script in two words?
Hell Week.
5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?
This is a hard one, but I can name a few that have to be tied for the most: Dances with Wolves, Interstellar, Se7en... I'll stop there, this could take a while.
6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?
Before I submitted Call of the Void, I had written the first draft in a few days. I was just feeling it after watching the new Stranger Things. The edited and nice draft took a week or so, then a couple rewrites probably puts it at a month or so.
7. How many stories have you written?
Besides Call of the Void, I have several written, and several dozen ideas jotted down. I am currently working on my next TV pilot, which plays with the ability to traverse time and the paradoxes within.
8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)
Well now you've really got me. This is maybe the hardest question known to man. It's gotta to be a Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks song... and for the sake of just getting people to hear it because it's incredible and hard to find:
Smile at you (angry version) by Stevie Nicks.
Type that into youtube and have a listen. Audio isn't the greatest as it's an unreleased version of the song, but it's amazing.
Also, anything by the Eagles. My dad had me watching Die Hard and listening to the Eagles since I was a kid.
9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?
The obstacles I felt I had to face to finish this is just my prose, my writing style. I tend to write in a present progressive tense with a lot of adverbs. So I usually have to go back and just rewrite everything more terse and just with solid verbs. One of the things you learn along the way.
10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
Besides writing, I love to be competitive and play sports. Ice hockey, golf. Also, reading is a huge passion of mine as well as eating and cooking. I think overall, I am just passionate about sharing experiences and cool shit with people.
11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?
My experience has been great with FilmFreeway. Easy to use and a lot of festivals to choose from.
12. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?
I just figured it was time to start seeing if my writing sucked or not. Apparently it's ok. My initial feedback was actually good, and that's what really started opening the floodgates, like, holy shit, I can do this.
