Palanquins of the Soul, 4min., South Korea
Directed by Seung-il Chon
Palanquin of the soul (Youngyeo) is palanquin that holds souls the deceased in traditional Korean funerals. In traditional Korean funeral culture, when a person dies, it was considered that 'soul’ and 'body' were separated, so that 'soul' returned to the sky and 'body' returned to the ground. In the funeral procession, ‘Youngyeo’ moves in front of the funeral bier. This means that the spiritual separated at the same time as death moves ahead of the body.
