Director Statement
As an award-winning filmmaker, troupe leader and dancer of ‘Ori Tahiti for over 20 years, AITO HINE is an opportunity for me to combine my two life aspirations: cinema and dance. When the choreographer of the dance, Tehani Robinson approached me for the project, we already shared struggles that we felt were imperative for the film: the emancipation of women and the uplifting of indigenous voices and wisdoms. The short film was born from this vision. This is why at first we bet on a troupe composed only of women that we placed on decors free of modern construction, in order to emphasize the dancer and her relationship with nature. By combining close-up shots of body language and close-up shots of the environment, we ensure that the viewers, dancers or not, identify and understand the meaning of a particular story: the birth of an Aito Hine. A powerful Polynesian heritage; our gift for all women in the world.
