A SISTER'S PERSPECTIVE, 7min., USA
Directed by Olivia Dabinett
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
I came across the home movies my father recorded at the beginning of the Summer of 2023, and I was overwhelmed with emotion as I replayed the early years of my life. A number of things stood out to me as I watched, namely the gratitude and perspective displayed by my little brother. This is what ultimately inspired me to create 'A Sister's Perspective,' which aims to emphasize the importance of presence, gratitude, and perspective in every passing moment.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
I digitized the home videos in late May of 2023, and the short film screened for the first time on August 4th at the University of Southern California. June and July consisted of hours upon hours and days upon days of production, where I worked closely with two of my close friends, Spencer and Alex, who composed the film's music and assisted with sound design. The process was daunting, frustrating, and overwhelming at times, but I would not trade the experience for the world. I learned a lot about myself creatively and personally, and found the experience to be incredibly rewarding above all else.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Moving and hopeful
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Writing and recording the voiceover for this film was incredibly difficult. I revised the script countless times before finally recording, which took numerous takes. I wanted to deliver my message without saying too much, so fully embracing less is more is something that I grappled with throughout the film's creation. Trying to find the tone and cadence when I recorded was also a challenge, and I played around with multiple takes before settling on the final voiceover.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I think the most beautiful thing about all forms of art, whether it is film, photography, painting, etc, is the yielding of a shareable output-- one that has the ability to evoke emotion, tell stories, and leave an impression. It was incredibly rewarding and fulfilling to watch the audience feedback video, and I am very grateful that these individuals took the time to share their thoughts on the film with me.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
My father had always walked around with a camcorder when I was little, as evidenced by the many home movies featured in the film, and I think that exposure to video at such a young age is the foundation of my desire to make films.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Interstellar by Christopher Nolan
8. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
FilmFreeway has been great. This is the first film that I have had in the festival circuit, so this platform has been excellent in terms of helping me get it out there.
9. What is your favorite meal?
I love a simple coffee with a ham and cheese panini!
10. What is next for you? A new film?
I would love to create another film that is similar to this one. We will see!
