Director Statement
A Perfect Step… is not just a documentary on the only 7th Dan Woman Taekwondo Instructor of India, Kiran Upadhya. With her journey in Taekwondo in the foreground, the actual backdrop are the insecurities of women in India. When I was introduced to Kiran, she told me how difficult it was for her to continue to become a master in this martial art form. This made me think of making a film on Kiran. In ancient India, women and men were equally respected. But with bygone centuries something went wrong somewhere! Nowadays women in most part of the planet are turned into sex objects, they are dominated. Martial art became one of the ways to empower Women.
I thought of emphasizing why they are called martial artistes, in Taekwondo, the fluid motion of the human body, the economy of the movement and the effectiveness of the fighting systems, have a beauty of their own. The film talks about the philosophy of Taekwondo and how the martial artistes are trained to finally achieve balance in life, focus, awareness and finally peace within.
