A MESSAGE FROM THE FUTURE. BOSNIA GREETS UKRAINE, 17min., Austria, Documentary
Directed by Edward Serotta
30 years ago, during the longest siege in European history, Jews and Bosniak Muslims, Serbian Orthodox and Croatian Catholics, came together in the city's last synagogue so they could give to their neighbors food, medicine and hope. In this short film, 6 of those volunteers have a message for Ukrainians today "They tried to kill me. They didn't. I survived. And so will you."
Director Statement
During the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, I published a book on how the Jewish community was helping its neighbors. 30 years later, when the war began in Ukraine, I visited with teachers, students and schools in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa, and was struck at how, once again, civil society has been standing strong. In this film, I asked six of those volunteers in Sarajevo to share their thoughts about living through hell. And surviving.
