1. What motivated you to make this film?
This was my first proper time writing a script so I wasn't sure where to start, I have heard the term write what you know before, so decided to start there. I have always had a deeply passionate love for food, and have been raised around the artistry that it withholds as I spent most of my childhood in Italy where the culture is predominantly centred around food. What shocked me was the fact that in the U.K and many other countries food isn't seen like this by a lot of people and more as a source of fuel or even a chore. When it came to writing I want my focus to be on making the people view a simple concept in a completely different way to how they had once seen it.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
The writing process was mainly done in two chunks the heftier time was spent doing research into the history of these foods. From there we recorded the entire audio and the visuals in a day and finished off the edit and mixing that same week. It was a quick turn around and It was great having such a proficient crew to help take the project so far in such a concise time.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Throughout the whole process of this film the most challenging thing had to be, resisting the urge to eat that glorious sandwich during filming. By the end of the day the 4 people we had on set including our wonderful actor Alex, split the sandwich into 4 rather small portions and devoured it, relatively cold at this point, And I have to say it tasted just as good as it looked still.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
Hearing the audience feedback was wonderful especially to witness such an unbiased source and from so far out of the circles we have previously worked in.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
Luca (Writer/Director) - For me making films is a rather new concept for me im currently in drama school at Bristol school of acting and during the past year have began delving into work behind the camera too. I have to thank this amazing discovery to Nathan Mills and Harris Walter owners of meadhaus productions for guiding me and teaching me the beauty of film from behind the lens.
Harris (Director of Photography) - I hated being an electrician, I would spend most of my days working thinking about films or listening to podcasts about films.
Nathan (Production Designer/Editor) - To be honest I flipped a coin.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Luca - Good Will Hunting
Harris - Evil Dead 2
Nathan - Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
We can't speak for other festivals as this is our first, but when it came to this experience there is nothing more we could have asked for.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
The interface of the website is a bit dated and confusing to use but the content on there is abundant. And once we were emailed by the festival it was easy and responsive.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Luca - My favourite meal has to be my dad's traditional bolognese, if it wasn't for his love of food that he instilled in me I wouldn't feel so passionately about the food I make today.
Harris - Ramen
Nathan - My mother's classic Ghanaian cooking - homemade waakye with beef stew, fried plantains, hard-boiled egg and garri with spaghetti. All paired with a chilled glass of Spiced Sobolo and sprite.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
We have multiple films already in production and more ideas that shall go underway into the new year. So keep your eyes peeled for new meadhaus projects as there's many exciting pieces on the way.
