The Absolute Devotion, by David Grigorian.
Being a good neighbor,
I welcomed the new family to my neighborhood,
And invited their kid, Jacob, for pizza,
He was just starting the middle school,
I was a freshman in high school,
He was new and didn't know anybody,
I decided to be his friend,
To make a difference in someone's life.
Everyday when I returned from school,
I would see Jacob waiting for me at the bus stop,
He walked a mile and provided me with snacks,
One time I found him standing in the foot of snow,
With the blizzard roaring,
He brought two thermoses with hot cocoa,
He was my best friend without exception.
His hugs never failed to make me special,
He was very compassionate, and sensitive,
More than the girls I was going out with,
He loved to play basketball,
We used to race each other around the block daily,
He helped me get back into shape.
Three years later I was severely sick for a month,
No one from my school even called me,
But Jacob came over with a pot of hot chicken soup,
That he had cooked from scratch,
He spent the entire day with me,
What transpired next still brings me to tears,
Jacob secretly liked boys,
But I was the first one he ever loved,
He kissed me on the lips and left.
I have never seen or heard from him again,
Except his suicide note,
He was repeatedly bullied and beaten at his old school,
That was the reason his family moved into my neighborhood,
He filled his backpack with bricks,
And drowned in a nearby lake.
