Born in Georgia in 1963, Soderbergh began making films as a teen, and shortly thereafter embarked on his career. An early short established the basis for Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989), which won him the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival, and a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination.
Following this early success, Soderbergh’s next several films were not met with much attention.
1998’s Out of Sight renewed industry and public interest in the director, and by 2000 he achieved A-list status with the one-two of Erin Brockovich and Traffic – both earning Best Picture nominations that year, and a Best Director win for Steven (for Traffic).
