Born in New York in 1971, to famed director Francis Ford Coppola, in whose films she appeared as a child.
In adulthood Coppola pursued directing, receiving critical attention with 1999’s The Virgin Suicides. Her breakthrough was 2003’s Lost in Translation, for which Sophia won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.
Coppola is the only American woman, beside Kathryn Bigalow, to be nominated for Best Director.
