Born in England in 1965, following his education Mendes entered the realm of theatre as director. Achieving much acclaim for his accomplishments, in 1999 he had the opportunity to direct his first feature film, American Beauty.

Impressively for a directorial debut, this won Mendes the Best Director Oscar, as the film took home Best Picture. Given the reigns on mostly prestigious literary works, (ironically usually “American” in nature), Sam continues to garner critical respect in the industry.

Mendes is married to Kate Winslet, and recently directed her in Revolutionary Road.
