Born in West Germany in 1955, Emmerich pursued art in childhood, later attending film school. His early career was limited to the German market, his first US feature being 1992’s Universal Soldier.
Building astrong foothold in the action/’disaster’ genre, Emmerich went on to helm blockbusters Independence Day (’96) and The Day After Tomorrow (‘04), and the 2009 release 2012.
Although lacking critical praise, Roland is one of the highest-grossing directors today.
