Ridley Scott - Born in England in 1937, Scott’s education in design speaks to his trademark visual fastidiousness as a director.
His career began as a set designer for television, and the BBC was soon training him in directing. Scott’s first feature film was 1977’s The Duellists, making little impact at the US box office; his follow-up in 1979, however, was Alien. This film was groundbreaking in the sci-fi/horror genre, and solidified Scott as a commanding director.
Tackling all genres and with consistently powerful material, Scott has had three Best Director nominations, including for Thelma & Louise (1991) and Gladiator (2000). Director Tony Scott is his brother.
