Born in the Netherlands in 1938, Verhoeven studied math and physics, beginning his film career making documentaries while in the navy.

Becoming a popular filmmaker in his homeland, Verhoeven moved to the US when his profile began increasing there. 1987's Robocop and 1990's Total Recall solidified him as a North American box office power.

Subsequent films such as Basic Instinct (92) and Showgirls (95) have contributed to a somewhat sketchy artistic reputation, but Paul continues to produce dynamic work.
