Born in Illinois in 1943, Mann received his film education in the UK, and began his career as a television writer.
His first feature directorial work was 1981’s Thief, but the spotlight truly fell on Mann in 1984 with his creation of the series Miami Vice, which lead to further success in the television realm.
Mann returned to films in a big way with 1992’s The Last of the Mohicans, and cemented a reputation for respected crowd-pleasers with Heat (’95), The Insider (for which he was nominated for three 1999 Oscars), and several films since.
