I became interested in movies from a young age, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Mad Max. Great rides, escapist, visual, attention grabbing, and far better than anything than the real world could ever hope to offer. I suppose it’s somewhat ironic, though not necessarily odd then that the films I want to make myself are dark. Dark stories, characters, plots, motivations.
‘Last Caress’ gave me the chance to further develop the style of film I’m drawn to. Visually stunning, minimal dialogue, dripping with atmosphere. Even more so it continues my primary interest in film, exploring perceptions of reality through character studies. My aim in this film was to create a whole new world, a powerful sense of place to imbue the characters feelings into the audience. The key technique in this is through the child’s sketch book. This is how she sees the world, helping the audience to understand how she constructs her reality. From the moment she hears the first rifle shot, everything that happens is a tragic, yet logical progression from her innocent world view to painful and unbearable experience.
