Born in Poland in 1906, Wilder studied to be a lawyer, but segued into screenwriting in his early twenties.
To escape WWII, Wilder ended up in the US; his tenacity soon saw him well-connected and scripting Hollywood comedies.
Nominated for his first Oscar for 1939’s Ninotchka, Billy would be nominated 21 more times for both writing and directing, winning six (for ‘45’s The Lost Weekend, ‘50’s Sunset Boulevard, and ‘60’s The Apartment). Billy Wilder died in 2002.
