REVIEW: I had a terrific time at the movies watch Big Momma 3. I sat in a small theater in one of those old movie houses in downtown Toronto. The kind of cinemas where all the seats seem to be parallel with each other and if you happen to sit in front of a tall man, then you might have some trouble watching the film. And the decor is tacky at best with rainbow colors meshing on top of each other in the worst possible of ways. I guess when they made these places in the 1970s, this was a hip/trendy style. Now it just reminds you of Mr. Furley's place on Three's Company (see TVland for examples). A place you never in a million years want to enter unless...., well unless you just paid $12.50 to see a movie. There's a sense of nostalgia for me when I go to these places because this is where I first saw these flickering images that turned into stories that got to my core in the early to mid-1980s. The first film I ever saw we Max Dugan Returns. And I've been hooked ever sense. Films with black leading men tend to get the second fiddle theater bookings in downtown Toronto because more of us are either white or Asian who live in this area. Most African Americans in Toronto actually live in the suburbs and Big Momma 3 is playing in 2 or 3 cinemas in the mall multi-theaters over there. But where I live, it's the 2nd tier cinema I have to go see it. Even my regular movie reviewers skipped on this film as I had to roll up my sleeves and come out of semi-reviewer-retirement to review this film. So here I am, reviewing Big Momma 3.
And I had a blast doing it too. It was a room filled with kids and their parents as I hit the 4:30pm showing time on Friday. The perfect time for families to hit the cinema as the kids just got off of school and the parents probably skipped out early for the weekend. I forgot that these types of films are mainly made for those kids. They all seemed to be having a great time as they loved Martin Lawrence's antics playing big momma. And his protege, his son playing small momma. They were laughing at all the right jokes and there were a few adult jokes thrown in the mix that were very funny and the kids didn't understand what it meant. This was a simple film without much meaning and it's all the better for it. I tend to get angry at times when watching all those animation movies where they lay their themes on a little thick. Be a better person. Treat your parents right. Blah blah blah! I don't think Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son is a great movie at all as I really don't ever want to watch it again. But it was fun to see and it taught me a lot of lessons on who the audiences are and what types of films you need to be making for kids who just want to laugh and perhaps get into the thrilling 3rd climax where cops and bad guys square off. This is a movie that balances the art of hitting the average intelligence mark. And not in a bad way. Big Momma 3 can't be too smart because then it will go over the kids heads and then they will get bored. But they also don't want to be too dumb, ala Saturday morning TV sitcoms, because that type of film doesn't do anybody good. The film finds that proper balance of fun and smarts. And hopefully Tyler Perry is watching because he has a lot to learn when making his almost unwatchable films. Sorry Tyler Perry fans, but deep down you know it's true. So if you have a kid or two, go see Big Momma 3 as it's the best comedy out there in the cinema today. And perhaps will make for a fun film to see when it comes out on DVD and Netflix. The perfect rainy day weekend movie to see while munching on popcorn.
